Last night I saw Philly HC punk legends Ruin and Pagan Babies play Union Transfer here in Philadelphia. It was a terrific show made even better by the sheer number of familiar and friendly faces from Philly's underground music scene then and now (and some future participants). I wanted to get photos of as many past interview subjects in attendance as possible. I didn't get individual photos of Ruin members Cordy Swope and Glenn Wallis and I saw but couldn't photograph Tim Dunn, Dennis McHugh, and John Paul Golaski, but I did get the below folks.

From top to bottom they are:

Stacey Finney nee Gold (just after my interview with Jesse Townely, which she sat in on and contributed to)

Elizabeth Fiend (I somehow, sadly, never saw Allen Fiend, who was there) of More Fiends

Ruin Interviewed on WKDU

Past interview subject Yoni Kroll interviewed Ruin on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at WKDU. The entire interview (broken into multiple parts and shorn of music) has been posted by WKDU. L!F!P! gets referenced a couple times, including when the band is asked about recording new music (which they are quick to avoid discussing). Those who have listened to the two interviews with Ruin members (Cordy Swope and Glenn Wallis) here on L!F!P! will find hearing all of them together to be worthwhile.

This Saturday, Philly: The Ruin Reunion Show

Ruin Reunion Show Flyer

I'm certain most Philly folks know about the Ruin reunion show this Saturday, August 31 at Union Transfer. You may not know that I'll have a small table there selling L!F!P! shirts. Come up and say hi! If you want a shirt, score one while they're still available. Some sizes are starting to run low.

I'm also hoping to conduct one, possibly two, interviews that day. I hope they work out, as I've been wanting to speak to both individuals for some time.

See you there!

The results came back from the doctor:
You do not have an allergy to gluten.
You are just an adult-sized baby in need of diaper change.

I will open a cupcake truck to cater to your needs. Like the theory that propels sales of homeopathy, the less of something you consume, the more effective it is. Thus, my cupcake truck will sell nothing, which is the least amount of less, and you can pay a premier price for this and know there are no allergens present in my [invisible] cupcakes.

The world was running low of "-ist" terms to properly police the speech of others, so today I learned of a new one (to me). It's "size-ist" and it's reeeeeally reeeeeeally bad. When describing a fellow humyn (ah, you thought you'd catch me using a peno-centric term!), never, ever mention their size, for therein lies a form of discrimination you may not even be aware you're engaged in. Some folks have been made to publicly and repeatedly apologize for their size-ism. You don't want to be one of them! There is a prison made for people like you and the warders know what's best for everyone. Posted: type or speak at your own risk!

By means of an example: I know person who shall remain nameless who once referred to someone as big as a "mack truck," but it was overheard as the individual having said "fat fuck." That was punishable by ten years in a gulag and a prolonged infection of sensitivity training. The "mack truck" comment would have only been punishable by nine years of forced internment in West Philly and a steady diet of gluten-free products.

My new public awareness campaign will be called "Size-ism Matters!" and will feature the image of a really small white banana beside a really large black banana.

I recently conducted what will likely stand as one of the most popular interviews of this project. I spoke with Dan Yemin, a Philly scene vet who's played in three of the most popular hardcore bands of the last couple decades: Lifetime, Kid Dynamite, and Paint It Black (along with other bands of note). Dan was kind enough to write a paragraph about L!F!P! on the Paint It Black Facebook page, so I thought I'd share it as his words mean a lot to me.

Dan wrote:

"This is worth checking out and checking into, not so much because of Dan's interview, but because this whole project is pretty crucial and inspirational. It's an interview archive addressing the history of Philadelphia punk/hardcore, especially the DIY variety. The project as a whole is refreshing and invigorating in the face of the proliferation of documentaries in which punk veterans complain about how punk ended or became irrelevant after they dropped out. All history is revisionist to some extent, but Loud! Fast! Philly! shows history for what it really is: multiple narratives, multiple truths. Drink deep!"

Ramsey Beyer: “I just joined my first band in ten years with three rad ladies. We're called Heavy Bangs. Our first show will be an event we've been planning through DIYPHL called First Time's the Charm, which is a show meant for all brand new bands, highlighting the importance of inclusion and diversity when forming new bands. I've been continuing to maintain the DIYPHL calendar, have been working on illustration projects, and my first book with a publisher is coming out in the beginning of September. It's a graphic novel memoir called Little Fish, geared toward older teens. I also just wrapped up a week as a volunteer for Girls Rock Philly where I was a counselor, band manager, and ran autobio comics workshops for 8-17 year olds.”

Once upon a time a man suspected of being the Unibomber, then a terrorist spreading anthrax, drew a picture of me with a lightbulb protruding from my stomach, a reaching six-fingered hand-wang, and lady-breasts. That man was the writer William T. Vollman, whose article about being under FBI surveillance was published today in Harper's magazine and online (behind a pay wall)
Here's an NPR piece from this morning about Vollmann and his relationship with the Feds.
I've long been an admirer of Vollman's brilliant and provocative writing. In 1994 I had the opportunity to interview him in Philadelphia for issue #5 of my long-defunct publication NO LONGER A FANzine. It was then he drew the picture of me that I'll always treasure. This is a photograph of its reproduction in my 'zine. The real drawing is in my archives. Cheers to Vollman for calling out the decidedly unAmerican activities of those who suspected him of domestic terrorism. Vollmann is a seeker and a man of empathy and vision. The only scutiny he should be subjected to is his writing should be widely read and appreciated.

Coming Soon: L!F!P! T-Shirts

L!F!P! T-Shirt Design

I'm having a limited number of L!F!P! t-shirts printed for direct sale from me as well as at the forthcoming Philly and San Francisco shows in November. It's a limited run, so I'd advise you to grab yours while they're still available once they go on sale. They'll be printed on heather grey Next Level shirts. Next Level shirts are soft, like a fake American Apparel. I'll be doing sizes small - XL. I'll be post when they go up for sale, but for now you can see the design.
