Tonight I had the pleasure of speaking at great length (the interview runs nearly 132 minutes) with Vern Laird. Most people know Vern for his long involvement in the skating community. I know Vern from his involvement in the Philly/South Jersey hardcore punk scene. We do talk skating (a subject I admittedly know nothing about), but we mostly talk about hardcore. For those who came through the late '80s scene (Vern started seeing shows at Club Pizzazz) and into the '90s (Revival, Unisound, Bonnie's Roxx, the Harwan Theatre, etc.), hearing Vern talk about those days will be fun. Vern sang for the last incarnation of the band Point of View and moved through both the hardline and Krishna sub-sects of HC. Flash forward to 2014 and Vern's got his own skateboard! The interview will go up here in a couple days along with photos by Karen Kirchhoff. For now here's a shot of Bull Bolo, Vern, and me on my couch. Many thanks to Vern not only for talking with me for so long, but also for being such a cool guy (he's even still vegan and straight edge as he turns 40 in a couple days). Viva Vern!
